The Portage County Soil & Water Conservation District has agreed to put the district's spending online as part of a partnership with the Ohio Treasurer's office.

The district's spending will be posted online at OhioCheckbook.com, Treasurer Josh Mandel's drive for greater government transparency. Mandel launched OhioCheckbook.com last year.

Portage Soil & Water Conservation District is the first soil & water conservation district in the state to partner with the Treasurer's office to post their spending online.

OhioCheckbook.com recently earned Ohio the No. 1 ranking in the country for government transparency by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

"The board of supervisors and staff of the Portage Soil & Water Conservation District have a long history of conserving resources, natural and monetary," said coordinator James Bierlair. "We are proud of the work we do with the taxpayers' dollars and we are proud to make our transactions as transparent and accessible to the public as possible."

"I believe the people of Portage County have a right to know how their tax money is being spent and I applaud local leaders here for partnering with the Treasurer's office to post their finances on OhioCheckbook.com," said Treasurer Mandel. "My is to create an army of citizen watchdogs who are empowered to hold public officials accountable."

OhioCheckbook.com displays more than $490 billion in spending over the past eight years, including more than 134 million transactions.
