GASB 68 has been around for a few years now, but it is still a complex standard that institutions may not fully understand how to account for. This session will help lay out some best practices and approaches to ensure institutions and auditors are working together to get the right answer and appropriate disclosures. There will also be discussion on upcoming accounting standards and how those might impact the institutions over the next few years.
The learning objective will be to have a better understanding of GASB 68 and its application as well as any new upcoming accounting standards.

Keith Martinez has over 17 years of experience in public accounting and leads the firm’s Columbus higher education team. He specializes in providing assurance and consulting services to public and private universities, with expertise in federal compliance. Known for his results-oriented approach and his responsive and reliable service, Keith assists clients in identifying and solving issues in a timely and proactive manner. Most recently, Keith has focused on advising clients on upcoming reporting pronouncements and regulations, as well as business solutions that increase efficiency.
Keith is a regular presenter on higher education topics and recently presented at Plante Moran’s 2016 annual higher education training. Keith also presented “See Beyond the Numbers – 2015 Accounting Update” at the Ohio Association of College and University Business Officers (OACUBO) 2015 Annual Meeting. Other past presentation topics include changes in financial reporting, auditing standards, and net asset classification. Keith is a member of the firm’s Higher Education Thought Leadership Team, which creates content for webinars, publications, and trainings. Keith currently sits on the Board and is the Chairman of the Finance Committee of a private college. In addition, Keith has experience serving various research organizations (research foundation, research institutions, research center, etc.).

Steven Bishop joined Plante Moran in 2003 and has 14 years of public accounting experience, specializing in higher education. He provides a wide range of services, including audit, review and compilation, and general business consulting. His specialized public and private college and university experience includes working with 20 colleges and universities and their related foundations. He currently sits on the Board and Finance Committee of a private college.
Steven has been a technical resource in Plante Moran’s higher education Single Audit practice and professional standards team. He has worked extensively in student financial aid and research and development in recent years, including updating the firm’s R&D program module. Steven also presented “See Beyond the Numbers – 2015 Accounting Update” at the Ohio Association of College and University Business Officers (OACUBO) 2015 Annual Meeting.
