COLUMBUS – Treasurer Robert Sprague today announced Compass Award honorees for the month of February. The monthly recognition program shines a light on organizations, programs, and individuals across Ohio who are working to advance financial literacy and empowerment.
“Ohio’s future hinges on our ability to prepare the next generation of Ohioans for success in the years to come,” said Treasurer Sprague. “Through the Compass Award program, we’re honoring the people and organizations across Ohio who are instilling our young people with the tools and knowledge needed to achieve a bright financial future.”
Compass Award honorees for February include:
Amanda Woods, Healthy Finances Program Specialist for OSU Extension & Coordinator for Ohio Saves
Ms. Woods plays a key role in coordinating programs related to financial literacy and empowerment at The Ohio State University Extension. In addition to providing support to the county extension offices across Ohio, she also serves as state coordinator for Ohio Saves. Part of the national America Saves campaign, Ohio Saves uses research-based approaches to teach and encourage working Ohioans on how to save money, reduce debt, and prepare for a healthy financial future.
Arlington High School (Hancock County)
By taking a holistic approach to financial literacy, Arlington High School ensures students receive multiple semesters of instruction on topics such as economics and consumer personal finance. Classroom work is bolstered by multiple opportunities for students to take part in first-hand career exploration activities and networking days. In combination, the multiple points of contact ensure financial literacy education is ongoing throughout a student’s high school career, while also providing them with avenues to post-secondary education and career planning.
MaryBeth Hutcheson, School Counselor at Arlington High School
In her role as school counselor, Mrs. Hutcheson is vital to Arlington High School’s success with students’ career planning and readiness. Prior to entering high school, students complete a career interest inventory that is used by Mrs. Hutcheson and her colleagues to construct individualized and structured approaches aimed at leading students on paths to success. Additionally, Mrs. Hutcheson created an online portal for students that features a number of helpful resources to guide them as they make decisions about their future.
